Instructional Poultry Farm(Established in 1948)

General Information:

The Instructional poultry farm was established in the year 1973 with four numbers of sheds. The farm had two separate units namely Broiler and Layer unit. All these units have been maintained under Revolving Fund account of Instructional farms. However, due to recent outbreak of bird flu in nearby Govt. Poultry farm (CCR) whole stock of birds in IPF was culled in Dec/2008. At present, the farm has been associated with a scheme on Experiential learning for hands-on training programme on hatchery management and commercial broiler production. Under this ICAR financed scheme, a new hatchery building and a modern broiler shed have been constructed with a capacity to produce at least one lakh broiler day-old chicks per annum. The process of installation of the equipments like Egg incubator, Generator, Feed mill, Automatic watering system etc. is in progress and once these works will be completed the unit will be operated.

Objectives:

  1. To impart teaching and training on various aspects of poultry production and hatchery management to the students and farmers.
  2. To develop confidence and entrepreneurship qualities among the students on hatchery management and commercial broiler production.
  3. To generate income from the sale of day-old chicks, table eggs, live broilers etc.

Significant achievements::

  1. The farm has been run with the revenue earned from a small flock of birds.
  2. The practical classes and farm duties (for students not going for educational excursion) of UG and PG students have been conducted in the IPF.
  3. The training classes/practical demonstration on Scientific management of poultry for rural women, Self Help Groups and unemployed educated youths have been conducted in the IPF under short term training courses organized by the Directorate of Extension education, AAU, Khanapara in collaboration with the SIRD, Guwahati, DRDA, Nalbari, Pragati Resource Development Society, Guwahati etc.
  4. Exposure visits to IPF, CVSc, Khanapara were done by a group of students from College of Vety. Science & A.H., CAU, Selesih, Mizoram, several groups of students from Guwahati, several SHG/NGO/individual farmers from different parts of the state.
